Orthodontics and Invisalign
Orthodontic treatment can also eliminate the need to remove healthy adult teeth, which is sometimes required when there is not enough space in the jaw for all the teeth to emerge correctly.
Distinctly different to the bulky, heavy and obtrusive braces from years ago, today's aligners are finer and lighter, some are tooth coloured or clear and may even be placed behind the teeth, making them virtually invisible, while others can be removed when eating or cleaning teeth.
Orthodontic treatment is also being prescribed at a younger age than it was previously. Treating patients around 7-8 years of age while their teeth and facial bones are still developing enables them to be guided into their optimal position easier than when in their teenage years. This may mean less time is required to correct problems and also eliminate the possible need for fixed braces.
Not only being used to correct alignment problems for children, clear and tooth coloured aligners that are difficult to see is why many adults too are discovering the benefits of orthodontic treatment. There has been a substantial increase in the number of adult patients undergoing orthodontic treatment to correct alignment problems they may have had since childhood or developed later in life, sometimes following the loss of a tooth.
