Description
Family: Moraceae.
Landscape value: A weeping mulberry with long pendulous branches sweeping to the ground that are cloaked with large, glossy leaves. This is a tough small 'special effect' tree suited to park and garden planting and used with good result in shopping malls and avenue plantings.
Height: 3 metres.
Width: 4 metres.
Growth rate: Moderate.
Habit: A dense, weeping tree, usually grafted at 1.75 metres. Becomes a wide spreading tree after many years.
Foliage: Glossy, bright green variably lobed leaves. Autumn colour yellow to yellowish-green.
Flowers: Insignificant. Male and female flowers are separate on the same tree (monoecious) with small, red female flowers in short spikes in late spring.
Fruit: An edible, small white to reddish-black mulberry that is a type of multiple fruit (a sorosis) in mid-summer.
Bark: Greyish-green with prominent lenticels (pores), becoming browner with age.
Tolerances: Adaptable to a range of site conditions. Tolerant of dry and coastal conditions and soils of varied pH values. Grow in full sun to part shade. Transplants easily. Responds well to heavy annual pruning.
Comments: Eventual tree height depends (in part) on the height of the 'standard' to which it is grafted in the nursery. Usually grafted at 1.75 metres.
