Wine Oxley Estate 2009 Fortified Durif

Durif is a highlight of North East Victoria, where is has resided for about 100 years. It seems to have found its niche in the Aussie soils and climate. For decades, it has been loved by a band loyal devotees, and in recent years has started to achieve the appeal it deserves. More commonly seen as a bold and ageworthy table wine, the variety also lends itself to the production of excellent fortifed wines. The 2009 season was notable for being dry and hot. We just could not help but to take the opportunity to harvest and fortify this small parcel of super-ripe durif. The grapes were made for it and the resultant wine shows it. This is an intensely coloured vintage style (best consumed within a day or two of opening) with opulent ripe black fruit flavours and hints of cherry and spice. The sweet fruit and soft, velvety tannins linger on the palate. Try with dried figs, cheeses or dark chocolate and good friends.
