Description
Family: Fagaceae.
Landscape value: An impressive columnar form of Pin Oak, newly introduced to Australia. This tree will create a very interesting feature in larger landscapes. Ideal for use in areas where lateral space is restricted but a stately tree is required including streets, avenues, promenades and carparks.
Height: 14 metres.
Width: 3 metres.
Growth rate: Moderate.
Habit: Narrowly columnar, with dense, uniform, upright branching and a central leader. Narrow habit is maintained without the need for pruning.
Foliage: Glossy, dark green leaves up to 18 cm long and 13 cm wide with five to seven deep, fine lobes. Turning deep red to bronze in late autumn, with an even more brilliant scarlet colour in cooler areas. Leaves often persisting over winter.
Flowers: Insignificant flowers in spring.
Fruit: Stout acorns around 12 mm long with a shallow, saucer-shaped cap. None observed in Australia at time of publication.
Bark: Dark brownish-grey, fissuring with age in flat, scaly ridges. The young stems are smooth greyish olive green.
Tolerances: Very adaptable to a wide range of site conditions including wet or dry, clay or sandy soils, moderate drought, atmospheric pollution and wind.
Comments: Best on moist, well drained, acid soils. May suffer iron related chlorosis on soils with a high pH. Prefers full sun. Has a shallow, fibrous root system.
